How to manage a case of Elephantiasis
Elephantiasis is a disease in which lymph vessels are blocked by a parasite and it gives rise to swelling in legs, hands and scrotum. The name of the disease is Filarisis or Filaria. It is caused by Waucheria bancrofti and it is a tropical disease. In India, it occurs mainly in Bihar, bangal and Odisha.
The treatment is very unsatisfactory. It is better to manage the disease in acute condition in order to avoid the chronic course. It damages the penis gives rise to Ram's horn penis and extensive solid oedema is noticed in scrotum, legs, hands etc.
The treatment is very challanging and our main aim is to minimize the deformity caused by chronicity of the disease.
We have some drugs to cleanse the lymphatic system so that the residual edema should be reduced.
