It is prolapse of an organ or a part of it through an abnormal opening. It is named after the anatomical site of hernia such as inguinal, femoral, umbilical, epigastric etc.
1. Swelling which increases on exertion, walking, coughing and weight lifting
2. Mild discomfort
3. Severe symptoms when it is obstructed particularly inguinal and umbilical.
The treatment is surgical only.
1. Avoid exertion
2. Wear support
When to consult:
sudden increase in size
Sudden increase in pain
Pain not relieved by medicines
